Despite these limitations in particular groups, the use of the vascular laboratory to screen for acute DVT in all patients is gradually rising, even as reimbursement and the number of technicians available to conduct these exams are declining. To ensure optimum vascular laboratory use, national standards in clinical pathways based on literature evidence must be established and implemented [105]. This provides a confidential way to answer questions and encourages honest responses. The total number of fentanyl deaths actually declined modestly in 2023, dropping from 76,226 to 74,702. Meanwhile, fatal overdoses from psychostimulants (including methamphetamine) and cocaine, rose from 63,991 to 66,169. Before the explosion of fentanyl and methamphetamine use, the U.S. suffered far fewer overdose deaths — roughly 53,356 fatalities, for example, in 2015.

We previously found that many of the current PWID in our ED had not undergone recent HIV or HCV screening. Our findings underscore the importance of protocolized HIV and HCV screening for all ED patients who are identified as PWID. Although the articles in this supplement were submitted prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, people who inject drugs (PWID) have in no way been spared. The social distancing measures that helped slow the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 may increase feelings of anxiety and loneliness among PWID while making it more difficult to obtain prevention, treatment, and social services.

Drug Abuse Among States

• To calculate the denominator for the rate, the estimate for the population proportion of PWID in the age group 50–64 years was applied to 2011 census data for persons aged 40–65 years (Table S1).
• The age groups were determined by the structure of the public use NSDUH data; we restricted all datasets to include only persons aged 18–64 years for comparability.
• However, those data on past-year PWID are not directly comparable to our rates which were based on lifetime PWID.
• This age range captures a majority of those who may have reported injection drug use and roughly corresponds to the age group for which CDC recommends one-time HCV testing without prior ascertainment of HCV infection risk [11].
